On my free time I like to give my undivided attention to my daughter and my husband On these days I keep my Camera at home to be able to spend some quality time with them. Sometimes there are moments that I see something that catches my eye and although I leave my Camera at home when spending time with my family, I at least have the knowledge of lighting and composition to be able to take a great photo with my iPhone. It's moments like these where you use your technique and patience of a photographer to create an amazing photo with what you have at hand.

Kayaking To Graveyard Ships

Posted by Kissenia Chara Williams on July 31, 2017 at 2:00 PM Comments comments (0)

This weekend we celebrated my husband birthday. For the beginning of the celebration we decided to go kayaking to Graveyard Ships. Now this was my very first time kayaking so I was very excited! The instructor gave us a quick lesson on the do's and don'ts before we began our journey. Throughout our journey we came across a few boats and ships that were passing by us of course I was a little afraid because I was still getting the hang of trying to paddle in a straight line! Haha! There would be times where I'm all the way to the left or all the way to the right. It took my husband and I a while to get totally in sync. Once we arrived to our destination we board along one of the abandoned ships and WOW it was such an amazing sight. Half the boat was under water and the other half was above the water. We we able to explore the abandoned ship. There were holes in the middle of the walkway that we had to be cautious of. From the top of the ship we were able to see inside and from inside we were able to see above the ship and the water below it. We discover a nest on the very top of the ship. We also discovered a bunch of bones still unaware of what animal they were from. The ship had doors, glass and seats spread out on the ground among the ship wreck. It was great to photograph your not so ordinary ship! After an hour of exploration we made our trip back to land. It was much faster getting back then it was coming! My husband and I found our sync groove and we were able to make it back without feeling exhausted!

Tips and links:

When preparing to go kayaking with your camera always bring a waterproof bag! You can store your camera, snacks and water! Yes make sure you bring a water bottle you will need to hydrate for energy especially if it's hot out. Also wear a bathing suit or anything you don't mind getting wet! You will definitely get wet I got soaked! Wearing water shoes is a MUST unless you have sneakers and socks that you don't mind get wet and muddy. I didn't wear my water shoes and I really wish I did.

Farm Trip

Posted by Kissenia Chara Williams on July 26, 2017 at 4:15 PM Comments comments (0)

I had the opportunity to visit two farms this semester. Both the traditional and also the Organic Valley farm. It was a very interesting day I had. On the first farm it rained on us so we were stuck in the for about 3 hours. During that time period we got to witness a Mama Cow beginning to give birth, we also had the opportunity to see how the cows are milked and even got to sample the milk. In the next farm the Organic Milk Farm, we were able to witness a difference in both farms. In the first farm the cows seem to be always inside the barn. In the organic farm the cows were free to roam the open land that belong to them, the farmers then will have the dogs lure them back to the barn to get milked all in all it was an experience like never before.

Tips and Links:

Always prepare for the weather and the environment you will be shooting in. For the farm environment wear comfortable boots you don't mind getting muddy and dirty or rain boots! Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to get messy and always bring an extra change of clothes and shoes and trash bags to put your wet and dirty clothes in. Also always bring along a water proof bag for your camera just in case you get stuck in a barn for three hours with your camera due to the weather.

International Center Of Photography Museum

It always amazes me the unique and original photographs I stumble upon when I visit a photo exhibit. Our photojournalism professor took us to the ICP (International Center Of Photography Museum) Which was show casing some of the Magnum photographers photographs. Although each Magnum photographer have their own style and taste they all share one thing in common which is the ability to share our world’s events by story telling through their original photojournalism background. When I entered the museum the first thing that sparked my interest was the family portraits that were displayed. Since I myself am a family photographer it was nice to find some family portraits being displayed. As I continued my journey through the museum I stumbled upon what I first thought was a slot machine… But then I notice that slot machine was used as a projector to show case a variety of images. With every pull you would view a new set of images projected on the screen. I found it so amazing! I love how creative the world has become when it comes to showcasing our photographs.

Gallery Hopping

Posted by Kissenia Chara Williams on June 30, 2017 at 2:25 PM Comments comments (0)

My life has been very spontaneous lately, and I am not complaining. I believe it makes life interesting then the regular day to to day routine. I look at a spontaneous event as a chance to find inspiration somewhere along the way through your adventure. For work I shoot with my Canon 5D Mark iii, I recently bought the Nikon D3200 to use as my “grab and go” camera. It’s super light and easy to just grab and go on your spontaneous adventure. This week my professor decided to go on a class field trip where we would get off at 57th and 5th Ave in Manhattan and well what is the next best thing then “Bar Hopping?” Gallery Hopping of course!!! Perfect time to try out my new camera. I was carrying my school bag with me since I also have a night class and the camera fits right into my bag without any struggle or weight added. We visited a few galleries in a 4 hour period. I found this trip very inspiration because I also take a Studio night class on that very day. One particular gallery help bring some still life creative inspiration which was the Howard Greenberg Gallery with work by husband and wife Leslie Gill and Frances McLaughlin-Gill. I found their work quite intriguing, the concept of less is more was represent also the concept of the very things we own in our home can be turn into a masterpiece. A classic "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Tips and Links:

Invest in a camera bag that fits your sponteous needs. Carry a light weight camera that way you can never miss a moment you wish you could of capture because you didnt want to bring your camera with you. Remember it's not about the body of the camera its about the photographer behind it!

Photojournalism Personal Documentary Project

Posted by Kissenia Chara Williams on June 29, 2017 at 10:30 PM Comments comments (0)

This semester I am taking a photojournalism class. We were assigned to do a personal documentary project. A few months ago Art-Start created a success story about me, which inspired me to looked back at everything I’ve been through with Art-Start and decided to in return document this wonderful organization to help bring awareness as a way to spread awareness through the perspective of someone whom been on both sides as the youth in need and the teaching artist. I got a hold of the program director of Art-start and have been granted permission to or as she stated “Lets Make This Happen.” Therefore I will be shooting their emerging artist program along with what goes on behind the scenes and also gain access to document one of their workshops in a shelter. These workshops are structured to support consistency, build resilience, and provide direction to youth going through a time of challenging transitions. Once all photos that is needed to complete this assignment have been captured I will then make a video presentation to share with my photojournalism class, Art-Start, and the public.

For a photographer the most rewarding thing that we can ever experience is our work being shown off. I will never forget the first time I seen my work blown up into canvases. I've had the pleasure to work with my clients for years, so whenever I go to their home for a photo session it's such an amazing feeling to walk in and see your work displayed throughout their home. Here is an example of my very FIRST father daughter Photo Session. I remember I was having a mother's day special and DAD booked a session with me so he can send the photos to MOM as a mother's day gift since mom was deployed at the time and couldn't be home for mother's day. Below is an example of the photos on canvases that dad had ordered then hang up on their living room wall.

Tips and Links:

There are SO MANY ways to display your photos, yes social media is a great way to share with family and friends but having the photos printed and customized can make your home feel like HOME and they also make great gifts!

TIME is the most important element in any successful photo session. The moment you book your session with a photographer your photographer starts prepping for your session to accommodate your needs. As a good client you should also start preparing for your picture day! Give your self enough time between the day you book your session til the actual day of the session to make sure you have everything you need, especially your outfits and any personal props you like to add to your photos.

Tips and Links: Always pick out or order your outfits ahead of time just in case some changes need to be done or sizes need to be altered. If this is a last minute session let your photographer know so he/she can help you through prepping.
